Mother May I?
During the 36th week of pregnancy Andy went out of town for work. Of course he wanted someone to stay with me just in case. Initially I was very torn about who to ask. I mean how many people are able and willing to uproot their own life for an entire week to babysit a pregnant lady? Eventually I came to the conclusion that I would ask my mother and see if she was interested. You have to know me intimately to know and understand the rocky relationship I have had with my mother in my adult years. Long story short our relationship has been a work in progresses for about seven years, with me not really allowing her into my inner life. I have honestly moved passed being upset or frustrated with my mother but I still have had trouble really letting her back in.
This week alone with her was sure to be a test. I mean neither of us could keep up a superficially cordial environment for the whole week so we were bond to be ourselves eventually. With excitement and trepidation I picked my mother up in Atlanta and started home with her. I honestly expected her to annoy me after a few hours but during our week together she amazed me! I am not saying she does not have quarks that get my goat but honestly I loved having her. We talked and while she did disclose too much as always about childbirth, marriage, life, music, food, well everything, as opposed to being annoyed by it I found myself wishing I could tape her to have these talks forever. She is so childlike and that has historically been part of the BIG problem but what I found this week is that she is still my mother the very same one I used to know.
There was a time in my life that she was someone different but that is irrelevant now because she is my mom again. The very same one who played kick the can with us kids growing just because she wanted to play with us. The same mom who sang off tune my entire life at the top of her lungs because it made her happy and yes she is the same mom who did whatever it took to give myself and my brothers and sisters a good life. She is the person who made me who I am. She is the person who I have been so standoffish to because I expected more of her… I sure bet she expected more of me too. She expected me to be kind hearted and forgiving like she is. She expected me to hold people above possessions, to play even if I am 26 years old, and to not worry if I looked dumb if I was having fun. It all just really clicked this week that I have a mom who is amazing, who I love being around, and who I admire deeply and instead of enjoying her I have been embarrassed by her. I don’t think that I’ll ever forget why our relationship changed so much but I can forgive it and be done with it. No one is perfect and I don’t want to waste anymore time not enjoying this lady. She is a going to make such a great Nana to Beckett and she has been a great mother to me.

Baby Showers

Carrie and Mleeka hosted a double shower for my cousin Heather and myself. We are due on the same day.
We are so blessed to have such loving and giving friends and family. The showers were lovely and the hostesses of each amazing women who truly made sure that we had unforgettable baby showers. Thank you all so much for helping us to prepare for Beckett. We love you all.
